Hello friends, it’s been a while! After a bit of a (much-needed) hiatus, FWT is back in full swing and better than ever. Thank you for your patience! I know for a lot of you this is the first newsletter you’re receiving, so let’s refresh:
Hi! I’m Tim. For six years, I edited and commissioned stories from freelancers at The New York Times. Over the years, I’ve seen thousands of pitches, and I’ve developed, edited, and guided hundreds of stories. I’ve taken everything I’ve learned and have focused it all on helping freelancers everywhere strengthen their game.
In April 2020, I started Freelancing With Tim. It’s a sprawling network of resources: I offer in-depth, skills-based online workshops on topics ranging from the basics of reporting to the nitty-gritty of structuring a longform narrative feature. I also offer one-on-one coaching, pitch reviews, story development, editing, and anything else you might need help with. I have lots of stuff for you!
This newsletter comes out every Tuesday, and I also offer a paid version, which adds: another newsletter every week, 50% off all workshops, discounts on one-on-one sessions, and the occasional paid-only event. More details on that here.
Next week we’ll resume our regular programming, but ahead of that, here are the upcoming workshops for the next few weeks — register for as many as you’d like! (All times are Eastern.)
October 4 @ 4 p.m.: Pitch perfect: Everything to know about pitching stories. This workshop will cover everything from the nuts and bolts of structuring a compelling pitch to the high-level questions like, “Is this even a story?”
October 5 @ 6:30 p.m.: How to write better personal essays. Not sure how to turn a personal story into an essay you can sell? Wondering how to structure a personal essay? How do you even pitch one? We’ll cover all those questions and more in this workshop featuring one of my absolute favorite essayists and editors.
October 11 @ 4 p.m.: The art of structuring a longform feature. Join me as I lead a deconstruction exercise of a longform narrative feature and give you tips on how to use those tools in your writing.
October 12 @ 4 p.m.: How to use social media to find freelance work. Confused on how to get work using Twitter (er, X, I guess)? Curious about the secrets of LinkedIn? What about all those newsletters with opportunities? This workshop is all about using social media to find work as a freelancer and how social can help you build a sustainable — and profitable! — business.
See you in a workshop, and so happy to be back with y’all!
-Tim ❤️
