Hello friends! Hope you’re, uh, surviving in this unbearable heat. Summer fun!

Let’s get right to it: I’ve got some excellent workshops coming up in August, including some of my favorites: On the schedule are sessions for launching a newsletter, writing better service journalism, improving your pitches, writing a great personal essay, and a deep dive into how to build a longform narrative feature. Super exciting stuff!

But before we get there: I'm putting together a database of rates freelancers have been paid recently. If you wanna throw in a rate or two, I would love for you to fill out a quick little survey! Now, on to the Zoom workshops (all times are Eastern):

July 25 @ 4 p.m.: Pitch perfect: Everything to know about pitching stories. Join me for a deep dive on strengthening your pitches, structuring them effectively, finding the right places to pitch your stories, how to follow up with editors, and much more.

July 31 @ 4 p.m.: The art of structuring a longform feature. Join me as I lead a deconstruction exercise of a longform narrative feature and give you tips on how to use those tools in your writing.

August 7 @ 4 p.m.: How to start and grow a newsletter. In this session, a few expert newsletter writers and I will dive into how to build a successful newsletter, from launching and finding an audience to growing, monetizing, and maintaining it.

August 11 @ 1 p.m.: How to write better personal essays. Not sure how to turn a personal story into an essay you can sell? Wondering how to structure a personal essay? How do you even pitch one? We’ll cover all those questions and more in this workshop.

August 22 @ 4 p.m.: What is service journalism, and how do I do it right? Service journalism is more important now than ever, and more publications are hungry for this type of reporting. Let’s get into the weeds about how to find, report, write, and pitch compelling, useful service stories!
