Hello friends! I hope your 2024 is off to a lovely start and you’re not getting too down with the ~winter gloomies~ (let’s just hope that little goober groundhog Punxsutawney Phil is right about an early spring).
I have a bunch of workshops coming up over the next few weeks on some of my favorite — and often most-requested — topics, including improving your pitches, upping your personal essay game, learning how to build a longform narrative, and using social media to find freelance work. The whole schedule is below, feel free to register for as many events as you’d like!
I’d also love to hear what topics you’d like to see future workshops on! Email me ideas to tim@freelancingwithtim.com and put “Workshop ideas” in the subject line. Everything is on the table!
Last, I am offering one-on-one pitch reviews and coaching sessions! Schedule a time to go over a pitch, work on story development, talk about career development, get advice on building a successful freelance business, get edits on a story, or anything else you need help with. Book a timeslot on my Calendly here.
Now, on to the Zoom workshops! (All times are Eastern.)
Feb. 22 @ 4 p.m.: How to use social media to find freelance work. Join me and freelance extraordinaire Kaitlyn Arford for a workshop on using social media to find work as a freelancer and how it can help you build a sustainable — and profitable! — business.
Feb. 23 @ 2 p.m.: Pitch perfect: Everything to know about pitching stories. Join me for a discussion on strengthening your pitches, finding the right places to pitch your stories, how to follow up with editors, and much more!
Feb. 25 @ 3 p.m.: How to write better personal essays. Not sure how to turn a personal story into an essay you can sell? Wondering how to structure a personal essay? How do you even pitch one? We’ll cover all those questions and more in this workshop featuring one of my absolute favorite essayists and editors, Matt Ortile.
Feb. 26 @ 4 p.m.: The art of structuring a longform feature. Join me as I lead a deconstruction exercise of a longform narrative feature and give you tips on how to use those tools in your writing.
March 4 @ 5 p.m.: What is service journalism, and how do I do it right? Service journalism is more important now than ever, and more publications are hungry for this type of reporting than ever before. Let’s get into the weeds about how to find, report, write, and pitch compelling, useful service stories!
See you in a workshop this month bye ily!

Oh, a few other things …
• Last week I chatted with friend of FWT Parker Molloy about the, ahem, dire situation facing all independent journalists and freelancers — and, really, the industry writ large. But! There is still room for optimism! Check out my interview here.
• I’m going to start doing Q&A posts in the newsletter to answer all of your questions, comments, and thoughts about freelancing and journalism in general. Drop any and all questions in the comments section below this post or email me at tim@freelancingwithtim.com, and I may feature it in a future newsletter. Let’s hear it!
• Friend of the FWT Mandy Hofmockel offers one of my favorite journalism newsletters: Journalism jobs and a photo of my dog. It’s a wonderfully comprehensive — and hand-built — listing of journalism jobs all over the country. If you’re in the market and looking, read and subscribe here!
• Don’t forget to follow us on Instagram!
Bye ily!
