Hello friends, happy Leap Day!
Let’s get right to the point: I have a ton of excellent workshops coming up in March on some of my favorite topics, along with some brand new ones! On the schedule are sessions for writing better service journalism, improving your pitches, launching and growing a newsletter, learning what editors truly want, and a deep dive into how to build a longform narrative feature. Super exciting stuff!
The whole schedule is below, feel free to register for as many events as you’d like. (And remember, paid subscribers to this newsletter get 50% off all events. Click here for options to upgrade.)
I’d also love to hear what topics you’d like to see future workshops on! Email me ideas to tim@freelancingwithtim.com and put “Workshop ideas” in the subject line. Everything is on the table!
Now, on to the Zoom workshops! (All times are Eastern.)
March 12 @ 5 p.m.: Pitch perfect: Everything to know about pitching stories. Join me for a deep dive on strengthening your pitches, structuring them effectively, finding the right places to pitch your stories, how to follow up with editors, and much more.
March 21 @ 4 p.m.: How to start and grow a newsletter. In this session, a few expert newsletter writers and I will dive into all about building a successful newsletter, from launching and finding an audience to growing, monetizing, and maintaining it.
March 24 @ 3 p.m.: What editors *really* want. A panel of commissioning editors and I will talk all about how to impress editors, give them exactly what they're looking for, avoid the traps many freelancers fall into, best practices for pitching, and so much more.
March 28 @ 4 p.m.: The art of structuring a longform feature. Join me as I lead a deconstruction exercise of a longform narrative feature and give you tips on how to use those tools in your writing.
If you like what you’re reading, please consider subscribing to the free or paid version. Paid subs get access to all past and future paid-only posts, the full archive of recorded Zoom workshops and panels, a guide on how and when to follow up with editors, an exclusive workshop on selling and writing a book, tips for diversifying your freelance income, 50% off all Zoom workshops, and more.
See you in a workshop this month!
Oh, a few other things …
• I’m going to start doing Q&A posts in the newsletter to answer all of your questions, comments, and thoughts about freelancing and journalism in general. Drop any and all questions in the comments section below this post or email me at tim@freelancingwithtim.com, and I may feature it in a future newsletter. Let’s hear it!
• Friend of the FWT Mandy Hofmockel offers one of my favorite journalism newsletters: Journalism jobs and a photo of my dog. It’s a wonderfully comprehensive — and hand-built — listing of journalism jobs all over the country. If you’re in the market and looking, read and subscribe here!
Bye ily!
