Hello friends! I hope you all are having a wonderful summer and taking all the time you need to rest up and care for your well-being — and, of course, having a successful summer freelancing!
SO! After a few false starts and a little ~summer hiatus~, FWT is finally returning this month!! It’s been quite a year — and, tbh, if you’re anything like me, you’re still dealing with pandemic burnout — but next week I’ll be resuming my normal newsletter and workshop schedule. I’m thrilled to get back in the mix with you all!
To kick things off, I’ve got a whole slate of workshops coming up in the next few weeks, including events on structuring longform features, perfecting your personal essays, writing a great story pitch, building a newsletter, and much more. See below for the whole schedule.
I am also happy to announce I am resuming one-on-one pitch reviews and coaching sessions! Schedule a time to go over a pitch, work on story development, talk about career development, get advice on building a successful freelance business, get edits on a story, or anything else you need help with. Book a timeslot on my Calendly here.
Now, on to the events! (All times are Eastern.)
August 24 @ 4 pm: The art of structuring a longform feature. Join me as I lead a deconstruction exercise of a longform narrative story and give you tips on how to use those tools in your writing.
August 25 @ 4 pm: How to write better service journalism. Want to write stories that help people live better lives? Join me and seasoned service reporter Anna Goldfarb for a workshop on finding, reporting, and pitching great service stories.
August 28 @ 3 pm: How to write better personal essays. Not sure how to turn a personal story into an essay you can sell? Wondering how to structure a personal essay? How do you even pitch one? We’ll cover all those questions and more in this workshop featuring some brilliant essayists.
August 30 @ 4 pm: An introduction to the basics of being a freelancer. Are you new to the freelance life? This is the workshop for you! We'll cover all the basics of being an independent journalist, including invoicing, negotiating contracts, finding work, building relationships with editors, writing strong first drafts, and more.
September 7 @ 4 pm: How to start and grow a newsletter. Want to launch a newsletter but aren’t sure where to start? Or maybe you’ve launched one but are having trouble growing it? This is the panel for you.
September 8 @ 4 pm: Pitch perfect: Everything to know about pitching stories. This workshop will cover everything from the nuts-and-bolts of structuring a compelling pitch to the high-level questions such as, “Is this even a story?”
See you in a workshop this month bye ily!
